Hymn: There is a star in the east
VU 70
1
There's a star in the East on Christmas morn,
rise up, shepherd, and follow;
it will lead to the place where the Christ was born;
rise up, shepherd, and follow.
Refrain:
Follow, follow, rise up, shepherd, and follow,
follow the Star of Bethlehem,
rise up, shepherd, and follow.
2
If you take good heed to the angel's words,
rise up, shepherd, and follow,
you'll forget your flocks, you'll forget your herds;
rise up, shepherd, and follow. R
An advent call to worship
M: Seasons come and seasons go,
All: but our God endures forever.
M: Our faith exhibits ebb and flow,
All: but our God endures forever.
M: Our lives may freeze up or may grow,
All: but our God endures forever.
M: So, let our souls magnify the Lord our God this day, remembering...
All: HE is the Reason for the Season
Lighting of the advent candle
MV 11 - Come, Come Emmanuel (2 times)
Come, come Emmanuel. Come, Emmanuel.
Come, come Emmanuel. Come, Emmanuel.
Reader 1: And so here, in a “deep and dark December,”
the light and the dark continue to dance.
Sometimes it is lighter, sometimes it is darker.
Reader 2 We see it here in church. Many of our hymns
turn to images of light.
Reader 1 And, the darker it gets, the more candles we light
on the Advent wreath.
Reader 2 In the darkest days of December, our Advent wreath
is at its brightest. As Scripture says,
All The light shines in the darkness
and the darkness has not overcome it
Three Candles are lit
Men We wait for light, and lo! there is darkness;
and for brightness, but we walk in gloom.
Women Arise, shine; for your light has come,
and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you.
Men For darkness shall cover the earth,
and thick darkness the peoples.
Women But the LORD will arise upon you,
and nations shall come to your light
Men The sun shall no longer be your light by day
nor for brightness shall the moon give light to you by night
All For the LORD will be our everlasting light,
and our God will be our glory.
The Fourth candle is lit
VU 7: Hope is a Star
1 Hope is a star that shines in the night,
leading us on till the morning is bright.
2 Peace is a ribbon that circles the earth,
Giving a promise of safety and worth
3 Joy is a song that welcomes the dawn,
telling the world that the Saviour is born.
4 Love is a flame that burns in our heart,
Jesus has come and will never depart. R
When God is a child there's joy in our song.
The last shall be first and the weak shall be strong,
and none shall be afraid.
Lord's prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive thosewho trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory, or ever and ever. Amen
Children's hymn: Jesus loves me
(verses 1&2)VU 365
1
Jesus loves me, this I know,
for the Bible tells me so;
little ones to him belong,
in his love we shall be strong.
Refrain:
Yes, Jesus loves me! Yes, Jesus loves me!
Yes, Jesus loves me! The Bible tells me so.
2
Jesus loves me, this I know,
as he loved so long ago,
taking children on his knee,
saying, 'Let them come to me.' R
